Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Bills of Lading and our free generator

What is a Bill of Lading?

+

A Bill of Lading (BOL) is a legal document between a shipper and carrier that details the type, quantity, and destination of goods being shipped. It serves as a receipt, a contract, and a document of title for the freight.

Is loaddesk.io really free to use?

+

Yes, completely free. There are no hidden fees, subscription costs, or premium features. You can generate unlimited BOLs and handling unit labels without any charges. We don't even have a way to charge you, even if you wanted to pay.

Do I need to create an account?

+

No account required. Simply visit the tool, enter your shipping information, and download your BOL immediately. We never ask for personal information, and your data stays in your browser unless you choose to switch on sync to share it across your own devices — which still needs no account or password.

Are the BOLs legally valid?

+

Yes, they should be. While there is no single BOL design, our BOLs follow industry-standard formats and include all required fields for freight shipping. If you're not sure just print a sample BOL and get input from your carrier. It's free. However, you are responsible for the accuracy of the information you enter.

What information do I need to create a BOL?

+

You'll need shipper and consignee information (names, addresses, phone numbers), shipment details (weight, pieces, description), carrier name, BOL number, and any special instructions or reference numbers.

Can I save my BOL for later?

+

The BOL is generated as a PDF that you can save on your device. By default we don't store your shipment data on our servers, so keep the PDF for your records. If you turn on sync to work across devices, a copy of your history is kept on our servers for that purpose — it is opt-in and you can disconnect at any time.

What carriers accept these BOLs?

+

Our BOLs follow standard freight industry formats and should be accepted by most LTL/FTL carriers. Please check with your carrier or freight broker to make sure our documents meet their specific needs.

Can I generate handling unit labels?

+

Yes! After creating your BOL, you can also generate 4x6 inch handling unit labels that include carrier name, BOL number, recipient information, and barcode (if PRO number is provided).

What other shipping documents can I generate?

+

In addition to Bills of Lading and handling unit labels, you can generate several essential international shipping documents: Commercial Invoice (detailed invoice for customs) and Certificate of Origin (document certifying where goods were manufactured). All documents are generated as professional PDFs ready for printing and submission to carriers, customs, or other authorities. Please check with your carrier or freight broker to make sure our documents meet their specific needs.

Where is my BOL history and template data stored?

+

By default, everything stays on your device in your browser's localStorage, and nothing is sent to our servers. The trade-off is that your BOL history and saved templates are only available on the specific computer and browser you created them on. If you want a copy you can restore later, use Back up on the BOL History page. If you need the same history on a second device, or shared with a colleague, you can switch on sync from that same page. Sync keeps a copy on our servers so your devices stay in step — still with no account, password or email address; devices are linked with a short one-time code that you generate. Sync is off until you turn it on, you can see and remove every connected device, and disconnecting leaves your records on the device.

Can more than one person share the same BOL history?

+

Yes, if you turn on sync. Open BOL History, choose Sync, and turn it on to create a workspace. To add a dispatcher's PC or your own phone, generate an invite code and enter it on the other device along with the workspace ID — the code works once and expires after 15 minutes. Everyone connected then sees the same BOL history, templates, product list and dispatch board, and changes made on one device appear on the others. There is still no account, password or email address involved. You can see every connected device and remove any of them at any time, and a device that is removed keeps whatever it already had but stops receiving updates. If you would rather stay single-device, do nothing: sync is off unless you switch it on.

Does loaddesk.io offer shipment tracking?

+

Yes! Every BOL automatically generates a unique tracking ID with a shareable public tracking page. You can add custom tracking events like "Documents generated," "Picked up from Shipper," "In Transit," and "Delivered" with specific dates and times. The tracking page can be shared with customers, consignees, or any stakeholder who needs shipment visibility. All tracking events are displayed in chronological order with timestamps and locations. View a sample tracking page here to see how it works. This feature helps reduce "where is my freight?" calls and provides professional shipment visibility at no cost.

I am a carrier, how can I use this?

+

Carriers can use loaddesk.io in several ways: Share the link with customers who need to create BOLs for their shipments, saving them (and you) time on documentation. Use it yourself for generating BOLs for your own operations or when your internal systems are unavailable. Small carriers without dedicated BOL software can use this as their primary BOL generation tool at no cost. You can also use it to show customers what information you need on a BOL, or as a backup system during system outages. Since it's completely free and requires no signup, you can confidently recommend it to customers as a convenient way to prepare shipping documentation before pickup. Reach out to info@loaddesk.io if you have specific requirements, a need for custom documents or any integration requirements.
